HotJar is behaviour analytics software. It focuses on the heatmap/session replay functionality, and lacks an analytics suite to go with it.
HotJar was built in the era of Google Analytics 3, and so having comprehensive web analytics wasn't a requirement.
With GA4 being the only standard, it now makes sense to have a combined web analytics and behavioural analytics platform, without having to build bridges between disparate tools, and without having to make compromises about which pages to track, how long to retain data for, and so on.
Moreover, Glass is significantly better value for money.
Glass is designed to the analytics tool of the future.
Glass vs HotJar on User Privacy
HotJar is a European company, but was built during the pre-GDPR era, and so GDPR compliance wasn't baked into the structure from day 1.
HotJar requires user consent for its tracking.
Glass vs HotJar on Heatmaps
Glass records heat maps of every page on your site, for every pageview.
By comparison, HotJar charges €39/month for just 500 sessions per day.
Glass vs HotJar on Data Retention
Glass keeps your data for as long as you are a customer.
HotJar's data retention is only 1 year.
The Future of HotJar
HotJar was acquired by Contentsquare in 2021, and the original team has moved on. They no longer publish a public roadmap.
